What Is The Los Angeles Challenge? The Los Angeles Challenge is a charitable organization whose goal is to provide economically disadvantaged children an opportunity to realize their full potential by providing the financial means to obtain a quality education in accredited private schools.
How? In order to identify candidates, the Los Angeles Challenge works closely with schools social, and religious organizations and interviews candidate families. By offering the motivated children of that family private school education, we provide the means to uplift the whole family unit. Tuition payments are made to the schools directly.
Who is Eligible? Children from elementary to high school are targeted by our program. Economically disadvantaged families, who most of the time live in housing projects, often come from one-parent homes and currently attend Los Angeles public schools.
Why? Impoverished children do not have the same oversight for their school activities. They are exposed to pressures from their peers and often attend crowded classrooms. The emphasis in their school is more social than scholastic and because their parent(s) has limited education and often is at work, these children are destined to fall between the cracks of the system.
Oversight? Our Board of Directors keeps a close watch over the students' scholastic achievements by monitoring their performance through the school's teachers and principal. With the parents' permission, report cards are sent to us as well as to the parents. We also monitor the children's healthy home environment. We have forged a relationship with the Boys and Girls Club of the Los Angeles Harbor who provides after-school mentoring, music, sports, and supervised activities for our candidate families.
Costs? The Los Angeles Challenge consists of volunteer directors, donated office space and donated staff support. We are doing our own fundraising, so there are only minimal costs associated for purchase of supplies and postage. Therefore, the greatest amount of donated dollars go directly for the children's benefit. We strive to have sufficient scholarship funds for at least two years or longer to keep our fundraising ahead of the curve for the education of the children whom we accept into our program.
Commitment to our Donors! Annual events with candidate families are held with donor, so that you see firsthand the children, their parents, and us, who give our time and energy to make this effort a meaningful and successful program in these children's lives.
